A covenant or partnership of life between a man and woman, which is ordered to well-being of the spouses and to the procreation and upbringing of children. When validly contracted between two baptized people, marriage is a sacrament. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, p. 887)
Requirements for Marriage: By diocesan regulation, arrangements for weddings must be made at least six (6) months in advance of the date of the marriage. This amount of time is required to meet with the pastor, reserve the Church, plan the ceremony, and attend an approved Pre-Cana Marriage Preparation Program.
Law of the church requires that the couple: be free to marry (never having been married before, free due to death or prior spouse, or declaration of invalidity of previous bond); have known each other at least six months; have adequate ability to make a mature and deliberative desision about marriage; have the emotional, psychological, and spiritual capacities (abilities) to carry out the purposes of Christian marriage, formation of a community of life between husband and wife, the permanence of the relationship and fidelity of the partners to one another.
