The Parish Catechetical Council, in collaboration with parish staff, has selected a new curriculum for 6th-8th graders. It is called Catholic Connections for Middle Schoolers and is published by St. Mary’s Press. The sessions in this program “will help young adolescents to make connections between the Catholic faith and everyday life and to strengthen their connection to the faith community. The Catholic Connections program offers a comprehensive overview of the Catholic faith that is correlated with the four parts, or pillars, of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.” (Program Director Manual)

Each middle school participant will receive The Catholic Connections Handbook for Middle Schoolers (St. Mary’s Press, 2009) and will be used all three years.  The handbook has been declared in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church, so you can trust that its presentation of the faith is complete and authentic.

For 2013-2014, the young people will explore the following:
Grade Fall 2013 Spring 2014
6th God, Revelation, and Faith Jesus the Christ
7th (Yr. 1 Confirmation prep.)** The Holy Spirit and the Church Christian Morality and Justice
8th (Yr. 1 Confirmation prep.)** The Holy Spirit and the Church Christian Morality and Justice
**Seventh and eighth grade will explore the same topics in 2013-14 because they will both be in Year 1 of Confirmation preparation.

SchedulingConnections will be offered for all middle schoolers at the following times:
  • Sundays, 4:00-5:30 pm
  • Sundays, 6:30-8:00 pm
  • Mondays, 6:00-7:30 pm
Note:  Wednesdays are NO LONGER an option.

Confirmation

The Diocese of Dallas has instructed all parishes to offer Confirmation preparation to 7th and 8th graders and the Rite of Confirmation to 8th graders.  The norm at Our Lady of Angels has been to confirm ninth graders.  We will begin the transition to 8th grade as follows:

2013-2014:
  • 6th graders – Foundational catechesis
  • 7th graders – Year 1 Confirmation Preparation
  • 8th graders – Year 1 Confirmation Preparation
2014-2015 and beyond:
  • 6th graders – Foundational catechesis
  • 7th graders – Year 1 Confirmation Preparation
  • 8th graders – Year 2 Confirmation Preparation

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church

1309 Preparation for Confirmation should aim at leading the Christian toward a more intimate union with Christ and a more lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit—his actions, his gifts, and his biddings—in order to be more capable of assuming the apostolic responsibilities of Christian life. To this end catechesis for Confirmation should strive to awaken a sense of belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ, the universal Church as well as the parish community. The latter bears special responsibility for the preparation of confirmands.

For more information and specific dates, please see the 2013-14 registration information packet.  For special circumstances or clarification, please contact the office.
